What to Take

So, you’re nearly ready to head off on your gap year, and the time has come to start packing your bags. Regardless of the different travails you’ve had throughout the whole planning process, you’ve now come perhaps the trickiest part, as there’s so much to pack! From your passport through to pants, everything has to be considered – and reconsidered, and reconsidered…

We want to make things as easy as possible for you though, so we’ve come up with a comprehensive list of all the different items you need to cram into your suitcase, regardless of where you’re going. So, read on and feel free to print out the list to use as a handy sheet to tick off as you go.

  • Plane tickets
  • Travel/health insurance documents
  • Any medication you take
  • Credit and debit cards
  • Dollars – these can easily be changed up anywhere
  • Driving licence

Clothes

  • 7 x socks
  • 7 x underpants
  • 3 x bras
  • 2 x bikinis
  • 2 x swimming shorts
  • 2 x shorts
  • 2 x light dresses
  • 2 x trousers
  • 7 x t-shirts (you’ll buy loads more)
  • 3 x shirts
  • 1 x long-sleeved top
  • 1 x warm hoodie
  • 2 x leggings
  • 1 x hiking shoes (if you are planning on loads of walking)
  • 1 x trainers
  • 1 x flip-flops
  • 1 x hat/cap

Medical Stuff

first-aid-kitStaying safe and healthy is a must while on your gap year – you aren’t going to have much fun if you’re not feeling good for the majority of the time! You can fit pretty much everything you need into a small first-aid box, and definitely don’t decide you can do without anything on this list…

  • Mosquito repellent
  • Plasters
  • Bandages
  • Handwash
  • Diarrhoea tablets
  • Painkillers
  • Rehydration remedy
  • Wet wipes
  • Hay fever tablets
  • Prescription medication
  • Suntan lotion

Other Stuff

camera-globe-pen-bookWhat – more stuff? Unfortunately there’s still more to cram into that bag of yours, but remember you can carry a lot of it in your hand luggage as well (use a sturdy backpack for this). So, you should also take:

  • Mobile phone – watch out for roaming charges
  • Sunglasses
  • Book
  • Towel
  • Ear plugs
  • Penknife – not in your hand luggage though!
  • Wallet
  • Pen
  • Paper/notebook
  • Waterproof bag cover
  • MP3 player
  • Camera
  • Memory card
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Plug adaptor
  • Rape alarm
  • Watch

Of course, this list isn’t 100% fool proof – you might have some specific stuff that you need to take. So, really think long and hard about your packing, but don’t worry if you forget your favourite t-shirt though, as you can always buy non-essentials while on your travels…
