|Capital City||Andorra la Vella|
Nestled between France and Spain, Andorra barely takes up a pinprick on most maps. While it is tiny – really, really tiny – it punches well above its weight though, and should be on the itinerary of anyone travelling in Europe. It’s really easy to get to as well, as it’s just a short hop from Barcelona and a number of French cities. So, you might not know much about it, but a gap year in Andorra will really surprise you!
Being so small, you’ll be able to base yourself in one place when exploring the country. Many people will choose the capital, Andorra la Vella, as their temporary home, and it has a surprising amount to do. You’ll find some great bars, nice places to eat and loads of places to investigate, including some buildings with long and storied histories. Make sure to get out of Andorra la Vella though and visit the smaller towns and villages too, as they contain loads of hidden gems.
Most of Andorra is made up of mountains, so one of the main reasons people visit here is for the skiing. There are many skiing resorts in the country, with provisions for those from beginner through to expert level. Hiking in the pristine mountains is also a favourite pastime for visitors – and a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. So, don’t forget about Andorra when on a gap year in Europe – make sure you include it on your itinerary!
Working in Andorra
If you’re looking to work while on a gap year in Andorra, your best bet will be the many different ski resorts in the country. There you’ll find bar work and other roles, plus those with skiing experience might be able to help with instruction. There’s also the chance to teach English as well. Andorra is a rich country, so you might find that the pay is rather good when working there.
As it is sandwiched between Spain and France, most people will choose to head to one of these countries. Barcelona is just a few hours from the Andorran border and is a vibrant, exciting place to visit, while to the north backpackers will find the French city of Toulouse. In fact, there is no international airport in Andorra, so backpackers will have no choice but to head to one if its neighbours!
